Quilt #2

After making my first quilt and giving it away as a Christmas present, I went to work on another quilt. This one was going to be for my husband. I again used a Moda layer cake (Tranquility by Sandy Gervais), but this time did it in disappearing nine patch blocks. This time I branched out and made my own coordinating bias binding. Here are some pics.

  1. Hi Elizabeth! I think I'm your first follower :) I am impressed with your first quilts - they are truly beautiful. I've returned to quilting after a very extended absence and I'm following several blogs to give me inspiration. Thanks for sharing, you are very inspiring. Someday I may even start a blog of my own (don't hold your breath though!).

  2. Very nice, Elizabeth. Love the colors and how your D9P turned out. If I may ask, what size were the individual squares that you made your nine patch?

  3. Hi Anna. I guess I'm not up on the lingo, because it took me a minute to figure out what D9P meant! :) The squares I used were from a layer cake, so 10" each. The quilt is around 60" square or so.

  4. Thank you for your reply, Elizabeth. I'm not to good with the lingo either and don't even know if I got that one right. I was just trying to shorten things up a bit as I was typing one-handed with a 6-month old on my lap. (He has gotten quite inquisitive with his hands :) I think I'm going to try this pattern out for my first big (as in bigger than a table runner)quilting project. I want to make a throw size quilt for our bedroom with Cherish Nature fabric. How do you think that would look? I'm fairly green at this quilting stuff as well and don't really know what fabrics work with what pattern. I just know what I like : )

  5. I think most layer cakes would work for a disappearing nine patch as long as they have a variety of colors and size of prints. If you want to try to imagine it, go to this page that shows a Cherish Nature layer cake quilt http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a1ljuVvDpDo/TJUZLHmp7LI/AAAAAAAADL4/Lf46fy_xf9Q/s1600/IMG_1452.JPG and then just use your hand to frame where you would cut the squares to make the disappearing nine patch. It'll give you an idea of what your blocks will look like. Hopefully that made sense!
